天津大学与常州有着特殊的历史渊源，天津大学是由常州著名实业家、教育家盛宣怀创办的中国第一所现代大学。他在给朝廷的奏折中说："自强首在储才，储才必先兴学"、"西国人材之盛皆出于学堂"。在他的倡议下，1895年10月2日，光绪帝御笔钦准设立北洋大学堂(现天津大学的前身)，这一天也成为中国第一所大学建校纪念日。在当时，其头等学堂的毕业生可免试进入美国哈佛、耶鲁等著名大学。被誉为"东方康乃尔"。

中国共产党早期重要领导人张太雷为天大杰出校友、中国著名系统工程专家、中国管理学之父刘豹、天大建筑系创始人徐中教授也都来自常州，是常州的骄傲！
